Courtland St. & Piedmont Ave. Safe Streets
ATLDOT Project No. 4001
Status
Design & Engineering
Project Overview
In partnership with the City of Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), CAP/ADID is advancing multimodal redesign plans for Courtland Street between Ralph McGill Blvd. and M.L. King Jr. Dr. Multimodal safety enhancements are also planned for Piedmont Ave. between North Ave. and M.L. King Jr. Dr.
Project goals include improving safety for all users, enhancing the overall efficiency of the Downtown transportation network, and where applicable, repaving of the roadway.
Project Background
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) previously awarded a Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grant to CAP/ADID to develop a conceptual design for a bus-only lane on Courtland St. A summary of that report is available here. ADID is now advancing the project from the concept phase to final design. The next phase on Courtland St. includes determining bus lane hours of operation, pavement markings and signage, and design of a southbound bike facility.
The addition of bus-only lanes in Downtown is consistent with recommendations of the Downtown Atlanta Master Plan, the Downtown Commuter Bus Routing & Infrastructure Study, and the City of Atlanta's One Atlanta: Strategic Transportation Plan.
CAP/ADID and ATLDOT previously partnered to complete design of a northbound bike lane and pedestrian enhancements on Piedmont Ave. between North Ave. and M.L. King Jr. Dr. as part of the Mayor's Action Plan for Safer Streets.
Community Engagement
The Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID), in partnership with the City of Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), hosted a virtual public meeting to solicit feedback on the proposed design for Courtland Street on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 5:30pm.
