The Auburn Avenue Research Library in collaboration with the Kilombo Academic and Cultural Institute and Ubuntu Films will host, We Are Shining: The Power and Promise of Black Children’s Literature and Literacies. This event will celebrate Black Children’s Literature and Literacies and the Life and Legacy of author, illustrator and fine artist Dr. Jan Spivey Gilchrist and will feature:

3:00 p.m. Colors of Love: The Jan Spivey Gilchrist Story Film Screening

4:45 p.m. Live Performance by The dynamic, soul-stirring, all-sistah, dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble Giwayen Mata

5:00 p.m. We Are Shining: The Power and Promise of Black Children’s Literature and Literacies Community Panel Discussion with Aminata Umoja, founder of Kilombo Academic and Cultural Institute, Dr. Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Dr. Stephane Dunn, Dr. Roberta Gardner, and Illustrator R Gregory Christie

With over 96 books to her credit, Jan Spivey Gilchrist's career as a fine artist has spanned a quarter of a century. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean, and has won numerous awards and commissions throughout her career.
