There is a vast history behind the grave markers at Oakland Cemetery- rich and vibrant stories of hope, despair, injustice, and rebirth- the story of Atlanta. While their telling is vital to our understanding of the City's past, we focus so heavily on them that sometimes we forget about the even older tale of the stones themselves: Where they came from; Who carved them; And why some stood the test of time better than others. In this walking tour, you will learn to identify the major stone types and observe the mechanisms of their deterioration, all while gaining an appreciation of Georgia’s geological heritage.
