Gallery 72 presents, “Nearing Singularity,” featuring the monoprint paintings of Stephanie Kolpy. This exhibition opens on August 22nd and will be a profound exploration of apocalyptic themes and ecological crisis, offering a deeply symbolic and thought-provoking experience.

Stephanie Kolpy’s work is realized through multiple layers of monoprinting, drypoint, and handpainted watercolor ink. As a symbolist, Kolpy delves into the visual and thematic parallels between apocalyptic mythos and the Holocene extinction—our current age where ancient species are dying off en masse due to climate change. The Greek word “apokalypsis,” meaning “to reveal,” has inspired Kolpy to articulate what the future might reveal regarding the natural world.

Kolpy’s art captures the escalating ecological crisis and humanity’s concurrent struggles with social unrest, toxic polarization, global pandemics, violence, and war. She addresses modern-day conspiracy theories and science-denying myths within the broader landscape of religious history and mythology, providing a compelling interrogation of these narratives.

Accompanying Kolpy’s artwork is an essay by Faith McClure titled “Radiance of a Thousand Suns,” which provides insightful commentary and deeper understanding of the themes explored in the exhibition

We invite you to join us at Gallery 72 to experience this impactful exhibition. It promises to be an evocative journey through the visual and thematic realms that Kolpy so masterfully navigates. Don’t miss the opportunity to engage with this unique and timely artistic exploration.
