Details
In celebration of Gullah Geechee Heritage Month, and throughout the month of October, AARL celebrates Gullah Geechee culture, Sea Island/Isles natives, and low country communities with a Virtual Community Film discussion.
This occasion will examine the Gullah community, isolated in the swampy atmosphere, based on ancient Yoruba traditions. This unique community is explored in Julie Dash's debut feature, Daughters of the Dust, a costume drama about the Peazant family, a fictional group of Gullah natives living on Ido Landing.
This event will be moderated by AARL Librarian Forrest Evans. Panel discussants include Amir Jamal Toure, Georgia Southern University Visiting Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology and Founder of ayCleanSoul; Ayinde Summers, Education Director of Project South and GSU Professor and Isaiah Quarterman, Vice President of Georgia State University Residence Hall Association.
