Why should you care?
The crocodile species in Zoo Atlanta’s care, the critically endangered African slender-snouted crocodile, is among the most endangered of Africa’s crocodilians. Continued habitat loss, habitat conversion for agriculture (palm oil and rubber operations throughout Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone) and increasing human pressures on natural resources (freshwater fisheries) have dramatically reduced wild populations. It is estimated that population reduction will continue to increase to 60 to 90 percent in the next 75 years, placing this species at great risk for extinction.
There are 24 confirmed species of crocodilians, a group that includes crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials and false gharials. Of these, seven species are listed as critically endangered. Crocodilians are dominant predators in the food chains of wetland environments, making them important keystone species. The removal of crocodilians would lead to the decline of other organisms within these ecosystems.
