Children’s Museum of Atlanta commemorates Friendship Month, National Dog Day and the back-to-school season with a jam-packed schedule of events throughout August. Featured activities include interactive building projects at Jane’s Innovation Station and discover sound through a cup phone activity at the Science Bar. In partnership with volunteer group Canine Companions, families can cuddle with adoptable friends on National Dog Day. Preparation for the school year begins with self-portraits at the Museum’s School House. A Sensory Friendly Session is offered on Aug. 6 to allow sensory sensitive kids to enjoy all the Museum has to offer in a comfortable setting.


August Special Programming

Friendship Month Programming
Through Thursday, Aug. 31
Children’s Museum of Atlanta is dedicated to teaching children simple tactics to maintain loving friendships. Kiddos will find joy in interactive readings of “How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends?” and “Should I Share My Ice Cream?”. Following the storytelling and activities, guests will explore the best ways to interact with friends.

CMA On Stage
Storytime: “Should I Share My Ice Cream?” by Mo Willems + “How Do Dinosaurs Play with Their Friends?” by Jane Yolen + Clean Up Game
Session A: 10 a.m., 11a.m. and noon / Session B: 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Jane’s Innovation Station
While exploring shapes and colors along with practicing fine motor skills, toddlers create a tangram animal masterpiece. Friendship Month celebrations continue with a design challenge: Building a Better World. Little ones will learn about empathy in action and use the engineering design process to build an ideal world.
Session A: 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. / Session B: 1:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Science Bar
Children experiment with sounds and vibrations to learn more about soundwaves at the Science Bar. Little scientists in the Building Blocks program use cup phones to explore sound as they communicate through cups connected by a string.
Session A: 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. / Session B: 1:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Art Studio
In preparation for the school year, kiddos can practice introducing themselves to teachers and students at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta School House, while drawing self-portraits as they get to know their peers.

Sensory Friendly Session
Sunday, Aug. 6
Kiddos with sensory sensitivities are able enjoy the Museum with sound and lighting adjustments. This sensory modified session allows all kids to celebrate Friendship Month with a comfortable experience!

National Dog Day Programming
Saturday, Aug. 26
To commemorate National Dog Day, Children’s Museum of Atlanta has planned a day filled with dog-themed activities, including Doggie Bingo and a special visit from canine companion volunteers and pups. In session A, guests can expect volunteers and dogs from Canine Companions to join during the storytelling of “Raising a Hero,” which follows Max, a determined puppy on his adventure to becoming a life-changing friend and helper. Puppies are available for pets and snuggles after story-time. Session B will read “Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog” with a furry guest, Callie the Therapy Dog.

Through Sept. 4
Shaun the Sheep™: Flock This Way! based on the popular film and television character, builds on problem-solving themes in fun, engaging ways. Created by Minnesota Children’s Museum in partnership with Aardman, the exhibit runs through Sept. 4. Visitors will explore the antics of Shaun the Sheep and his pals on Mossy Bottom Farm. Designed for children ages 3 through 9, the exhibit has components and activities that encourage children to playfully explore themes around problem-solving and resilience in a safe and lighthearted manner and aims to make the analytical process explicit. Also included is a “tot spot” specifically for children under 3.
