Details
The year 2020 brought everyone into their homes and gave us a new relationship with our surroundings. Some felt safe and comforted by their dwellings. Others began to regard their sanctuaries as cages. For some, home became not only a workplace but a muse. For others, origins, dwellings and roots were muses long before a pandemic locked us in our homes. The significance of shelters, dwellings, roots and uprooting is communicated in a myriad of ways by the artists in this exhibit.
Among the themes explored in this exhibit are the struggle to find the balance between work and housework, a woman’s role as “home-maker,” the yearning to be with family, the difficulty of being with family, the desire to escape home, the feeling of being displaced, the spirits of Atlanta and New Orleans, the architectural delights of the south, the vulnerable and ephemeral states of dwellings, the genealogy of home, the streets we travel to get home, whether home is here or there, and whether home is a place, a person, or a feeling, and whether home can be defined at all.
