A 13-acre greenspace is planned on the site of the Georgia Dome, which will be demolished once Mercedes-Benz Stadium opens.
It will be called The Home Depot Backyard and it will be used for game-day parking, events and entertainment. It's set to open in 2018.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, donning an orange Home Depot apron on Friday, shared his excitement for the project. He believes it will help lift up the Westside neighborhoods around the new stadium, a pledge he’s had for many years.
“The Home Depot is a natural partner for us to create a space that will drive connectivity and community engagement, key elements of the core values that we share,” Blank said. “We are proud to be working together to bring the Westside to downtown and all of Atlanta.”
Craig Menear, Home Depot chairman, CEO and president, said it’s going to be the best backyard in sports.
“Beyond the stadium, we continue to work with partners like the Atlanta Beltline, Habitat for Humanity, HouseProud and many others to revitalize outdoor spaces and perform critical home repairs in the Westside – part of our commitment to giving back to our communities,” Menear added.
Earlier this week, the Falcons announced the demolition of the Georgia Domewould be postponed amid construction delays for Mercedes-Benz Stadium. On Friday, Blank said he expected decommission of the Dome to resume in June.
