When people talk about former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin, the 2018 recipient of the Dan Sweat Award from Central Atlanta Progress (CAP), they use variations of one word: courage.
“Shirley is a courageous leader,” said Carol Naughton, president of Purpose Built Communities, a non-profit community consulting organization where Franklin is executive board chair. “She will take in information. She wants to hear different points of view. And at the end of the day, she makes the right decision.”
Named after a past president of CAP, the Dan Sweat Award, according to its description, “celebrates those who presently emulate his best traits: iconoclastic leadership; forward-thinking public service and humility of spirit.”
Franklin said she is both honored and surprised to receive the award. “There are so many people who contribute in significant ways,” she said, “and after leaving office, I didn’t expect to get any more awards.”
