Georgia Power Brings New Natural Gas Plant On-line
April 30,2012
Georgia Power Co. is two-thirds of the way to adding 2,520 megawatts of generating capacity using natural gas. The second of three natural gas-fired units at the Atlanta-based utility’s Plant McDonough in Smyrna, Ga., went into service last week, Georgia Power officials announced Monday.
The first natural gas unit went on line at the plant last December, and the third unit is due to begin operating in November.
The $2 billion project is part of an Integrated Resource Plan update for Georgia Power approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission that gives natural gas a larger role in the utility’s resource mix.
