Deadline for rolling out Atlanta Streetcar fare approaching
December 2,2015
ATLANTA -- The end of the year is approaching, and some are asking whether the city will be ready to roll out the new high-tech pay system for the Atlanta streetcar.
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said Wednesday the city needs to get folks to start paying the $1 fare as soon as possible without diminishing ridership.
"I believe they'll use it (the streetcar) for a dollar," he told 11Alive's Duffie Dixon.
After realizing the Marta Breeze Card system wouldn't work for the streetcar, the city lost out on an estimated $300,000. Now, the city is looking at implementing something more modern, like a smartphone app. In the interim, the mayor was forced to offer free rides.
