Clark Dean of Studley leads group to raise funds by staying outside overnight
November 16,2012
In Northwest Atlanta, more than three dozen of the city's business leaders rolled out blankets, sleeping bags and cardboard boxes, preparing to brave the cold.
"They estimate that between 350 and 700 kids are on the street every night," said Clark Dean, senior director of Studley, Inc. and organizer of Thursday night's event. "Think about an entire high school of kids that have no place to call home that are out on the streets." The group slept out to raise money and awareness for Covenant House, a shelter for Atlanta's homeless youth. Bankers, entrepreneurs and other professionals spread the word about their mission and solicited friends to give money. By midnight, their donations exceeded $70,000.
The evening included a basketball game with the kids in Covenant House, a tour of the home and a candlelight vigil. The "Sleep Out" concluded with a 5:30 a.m. breakfast.
