Edgewood Avenue Bridge Reopens on April 1

On Tuesday, April 1, the Edgewood Avenue Bridge over the Atlanta BeltLine corridor will reopen to vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. This span has been closed for one year for demolition and reconstruction. A dedication for the new bridge will be held this summer when ramp and stair connections to the Atlanta BeltLine are completed. Contractors will also continue work on fencing along sidewalks causing temporary closures for pedestrians.

The reopening of the bridge will significantly improve connectivity between Inman Park and the Old Fourth Ward neighborhoods, benefitting businesses, residents and commuters who traverse the area. Later this year, ABI will begin construction on the southern extension of the Eastside Trail, which currently terminates at Irwin St. With the addition of ramp and stair connections to the Atlanta BeltLine, Edgewood Avenue will become a new access point to the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail when the new extension is complete.

The old bridge was more than 100 years old and was one of the lowest structurally rated bridges in use in the City of Atlanta. Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. managed the design, demolition and construction on behalf of the City of Atlanta’s Department of Public Works and is reopening the bridge to traffic on schedule.
